“Il mio nonno Battista, che qui lavoro non ce n’era e se ne andava in giro in Slovacchia e Ungheria a fare il minatore. E gli alberi li tagliavano d’inverno, e uscivano al mattino con una gamella di brodo ghiacciato. E qui avevamo un campo che dava patate e orzo che qui grano se ne è sempre visto poco. E una mucca, una capra e un maiale.
E poi Battista è andato a fare il minatore nel Minnesota.

E la Lina, primogenita, a 5 anni ogni mattina andava alla fontana con le donne del paese a lavare. E un giorno mentre lavava ha detto: “La mia mamma stanotte ha dormito con un uomo con le mutande rosse”. E le donne del paese ma va là, ma cosa dici il Battista l’è in America e la Viola è una donna perbene. Però poi tra loro chissà cosa pensavano e iniziavano a chiedersi chi fosse quello là con le mutande rosse. E nei paesi, si sa, le voci girano. Ma tra quelle donne ce n’era una che si chiamava Zaiga che andò su in casa dalla nonna Viola e le disse più o meno: “Senti Viola, tu nel tuo letto fai quello che vuoi ma stai attenta che tua figlia ti vede e stamattina alla fontana ha raccontato che hai dormito con uno con le mutande rosse.”
E a quel punto dalla camera da letto è uscito il nonno Battista, con le mutande rosse. Che era tornato proprio quella notte dall’America con su quei mutandoni lunghi e antichi tipo quelli dei cowboy. Hai mai visto “Quella casa nella prateria”? Lo danno dopo pranzo su Rai3 e il papà della famiglia ha proprio quelle mutande lì, una salopette lunga e rossa che poi ormai quello del Battista era un rosso tutto scolorito quindi una specie di rosa, con la bottoniera proprio qui che è dove gli uomini fanno la pipì.”
